The first Mini Cooper debuted in 1961 and hit the racetrack soon after, capturing its first victory as an overlooked underdog. Sixty years later, MINI commemorates the brand’s motorsport pedigree and iconic design with the MINI Anniversary Edition.
“In 1961, my grandfather saw the potential in his good friend, Alec Issigonis’s innovatively designed new car, the Mini. The way it handled, led him to create the Mini cooper – a small underdog that took on the racing world, and won.” – Charlie Cooper
The first race in a Cooper Car Company Mini Cooper was the Snetterton Lombank Trophy. The Mini Cooper that won the class was number 74. The iconic design elements of the classic Cooper Car Company Cars were in green body color and white bonnet stripes.
Inspired by the Cooper Car Company, the exterior features British Raching Green IV, which is not normally available on John Cooper Works models. The body color is then accented with white roof and mirrors as well as, for the first time, white head light rings, tail light rings, and door handles. Bonnet stripes are also in white with red accent stripes to match. On the doors and bonnet is the number 74 representing the number on the very first Mini Cooper raced under the Cooper Car Company which took home the Gold at Snetterton Lombank Trophy. With a final nod to the racing pedigree of this special MINI, the aesthetics of the Cooper Car Company logo are used for the side scuttles, door sills, and a subtle boot graphic was created.
Comparing to the original #74 Mini, the interior of the Anniversary Edition offers much more technology with the included 8.8″ Touchscreen Navigation Package, as well as heated seats and heated steering wheel to keep you comfortable during cold weather motoring. Looking up, you’ll see the dual panoramic moonroof and you can jam out using the Harman/Kardon Premium Sound System. Behind your digital instrument display are the autographs of John Cooper, John Michael Cooper, and Charlie Cooper, the 3 generation of Coopers that are behind the very special edition you’re driving.
